BTS came to win! They have swept all the Daesang Awards plus more at the 2020 Mnet Asian Music Awards (MAMAs). The ceremony was held on December 4 at the Nagoya Dome in Japan.  BTS becomes the first act in history to receive all the Daesangs at MAMA which is impressive as they also swept the Daesangs of the 2019 Melon Music Awards!

BTS achieved a remarkable feat by securing nine awards, including a “Daesang All Kill,” sweeping all four grand prizes at the 2020 Mnet Asian Music Awards (MAMA). This monumental accomplishment underscored their unparalleled influence in the music industry and solidified their status as global icons.

The four Daesangs (grand prizes) that BTS clinched were:

  1. Artist of the Year: Recognizing BTS as the most impactful artist of 2020.
  2. Album of the Year: Awarded for their album Map of the Soul: 7, which received widespread acclaim and showcased their artistic growth.
  3. Song of the Year: For their chart-topping single “Dynamite,” which broke numerous records and introduced BTS to a broader international audience.
  4. Worldwide Icon of the Year: Celebrating their global reach and influence across diverse cultures and regions.

In addition to these Daesangs, BTS also took home several other awards, including:

  • Best Male Group: Affirming their position as the leading male group in the industry.
  • Best Dance Performance – Male Group: For their dynamic choreography in “Dynamite.”
  • Best Music Video: Recognizing the creative visuals of “Dynamite.”
  • Worldwide Fans’ Choice Top 10: An award voted on by fans, highlighting their dedicated global fanbase.
  • Best Collaboration: For their work with other artists, showcasing their versatility and collaborative spirit.

This clean sweep of the Daesangs at MAMA was not an isolated event. BTS had previously achieved a similar feat in 2019, making them the first and only artist in MAMA history to win all four Daesangs in consecutive years. This consistency in excellence speaks volumes about their sustained impact and the quality of their work.

The 2020 MAMA ceremony was held under unique circumstances due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Without a live audience, the event relied heavily on virtual performances and digital interactions. BTS’s performance of “Life Goes On” was particularly poignant. Despite member SUGA’s absence due to shoulder surgery, he appeared as a hologram during his verse, symbolizing the group’s commitment to unity and innovation.

BTS’s journey to such accolades has been marked by relentless hard work, authenticity, and a deep connection with their fans, known as ARMY. Their music often delves into themes of self-love, mental health, and societal issues, resonating with a broad audience worldwide. The success of “Dynamite,” their first English-language single, exemplifies their ability to transcend language barriers and captivate listeners globally.

The significance of BTS’s achievements at the 2020 MAMA extends beyond the trophies. It reflects a shift in the global music landscape, where non-English acts are gaining unprecedented recognition and reshaping industry norms. BTS’s influence has paved the way for other K-pop and international artists to aspire for and achieve global success.

In conclusion, BTS’s nine awards at the 2020 Mnet Asian Music Awards, including the historic “Daesang All Kill,” underscore their exceptional talent, hard work, and the profound bond they share with their fans. Their achievements continue to inspire and set new benchmarks in the music industry, solidifying their legacy as one of the most influential artists of their time.

The most special moment was when Suga spoke through a phone call and said,

“I am watching the ceremony live. I want to say thank you to ARMY, who have given us the Album of the Year award. It’s the second year in a row that we’ve received the Album of the Year award. This is for the album that received the most love this year, right? We worked hard to prepare this album in the United States and more, so we’re grateful that it received so much love. I feel happy knowing we’ve won Album of the Year. I’m working hard on my recovery, so please don’t worry. A lot of people I know are texting me saying that they’re having fun watching MAMA, but it feels weird because I’m not there. It’s a bit embarrassing to say this, but I’m with you all in spirit. Thank you. ARMY, I love you.” SUGA

BTS won “Artist Of The Year,” Song Of The Year – Dynamite,” “Worldwide Fan’s Choice,” “Album Of The Year – Map Of The Soul Album,” “Best Music Video – Dynamite,” “Dance Performance Male – Dynamite,” “Best Male Group,” “Worldwide Icon Of The Year,” “2020 Visionary”
