The year 2020 will forever be remembered as the year the world stood still. A year that began with so much hope and promise took an abrupt and harrowing turn when COVID-19 emerged, spreading swiftly across the globe. It brought with it not just a health crisis, but a wave of darkness, pain, loss, and confusion. Plans were canceled, doors were closed, and people everywhere were left wondering how they would cope. Amidst all the uncertainty, loneliness, and disillusionment, there was an overwhelming need for healing, connection, and hope. And in that silence and sorrow, BTS became a light.
For millions of people around the world, BTS was more than just a music group during the pandemic, they were a source of stability, a lifeline, and a constant reminder that things might still get better. Their long-standing message of self-love, mental health awareness, and emotional honesty became more important than ever. Through their music, words, and actions, they reached across the void created by isolation and made people feel seen, heard, and loved.
Even BTS themselves weren’t immune to the emotional toll of the pandemic. In various interviews, livestreams, and even their lyrics, the members candidly shared their own experiences of sadness, frustration, and uncertainty. They were transparent about how the sudden cancellation of tours and the inability to meet ARMY face-to-face affected them deeply. The loss of routine, the absence of a cheering crowd, and the emotional exhaustion that came with adjusting to a new, isolated reality were heavy burdens to carry, even for global superstars. But rather than hide those feelings, they chose to be vulnerable. They spoke up about their struggles, showing fans that it was okay to feel lost, scared, or unmotivated.
Yet even in the midst of their personal hardships, BTS remained committed to lifting others up. They leaned into their role as artists and public figures to offer comfort to a hurting world. One of their most heartfelt responses came through the album “BE,” released in November 2020. This album was a product of the pandemic, a reflection of the times, of the longing for connection, and of the resilience of the human spirit. Every track on BE was like a letter to ARMY, acknowledging the sadness of the moment while also gently reminding listeners that “Life Goes On.”
That lead single, Life Goes On, was a powerful anthem of quiet strength. It didn’t try to dismiss the grief or pretend that everything was fine. Instead, it acknowledged the pain, embraced the stillness, and whispered a soft but steady assurance that even in the most uncertain times, we keep moving forward. The lyrics, the visuals, and the gentle tone all resonated deeply with people who had lost loved ones, lost jobs, or simply lost their sense of direction. In a time where nothing felt certain, BTS offered a sense of calm and continuity.
And thank goodness for technology, because it was the bridge that kept BTS and ARMY connected throughout the storm. From V LIVE broadcasts to Bang Bang Con, from Weverse posts to online concerts, BTS did everything they could to maintain their bond with fans. They performed virtually, interacted on livestreams, and posted messages of encouragement that felt deeply personal. It was almost as if they were holding ARMY’s hands, reminding them that they were not alone, no matter how distant things felt.
The emotional impact of “Bang Bang Con: The Live” and “Map of the Soul ON:E”both held online, cannot be overstated. These virtual concerts became a moment of togetherness, with millions tuning in from across the world. Despite the physical distance, the energy, the love, and the shared tears transcended screens. BTS poured their hearts into these shows, delivering powerful performances and engaging with fans like they were right there in front of them. They were separated by miles, yet emotionally as close as ever.
In addition to their musical contributions, BTS also used their platform for philanthropy and advocacy. They made generous donations to COVID-19 relief efforts and encouraged fans to do the same. Through their ongoing partnership with UNICEF for the “Love Myself” campaign, they continued to promote messages of hope and self-compassion. In a joint message at the 75th UN General Assembly, BTS gave heartfelt speeches about their own struggles during the pandemic and called on young people to keep going, to “remember who you are,” and to live life with hope. Their words were tender and real, and they were a reminder that even idols stumble, but they keep moving forward.
Perhaps one of the most touching things about BTS during 2020 was how present they remained, not just in the media, but emotionally. They never distanced themselves from what fans were feeling. Whether it was Jimin’s heartfelt tears, RM’s words of comfort, or SUGA’s quiet strength, each member offered something meaningful. They became mirrors of their audience, reflecting fear and fatigue, but also courage and care.
Even now, as the world slowly finds its footing again, the impact of BTS’s presence during the pandemic continues to echo. Fans often speak of how their music and words got them through some of their darkest days. For many, BTS was the reason they smiled again, the reason they found purpose, the reason they believed that better days would come. And that’s the magic of BTS, not just that they make good music, but that their message resonates deeply with the human experience.
So while 2020 was a year filled with hardship, it was also a year that reminded us of the importance of connection, empathy, and love. BTS stepped up, not because they had to, but because that’s who they are. Artists who feel deeply, who care profoundly, and who always, always remember the people who love them. Even if things haven’t fully returned to normal, BTS’s presence continues to be a source of light. And for a world that once felt so overwhelmed by darkness, that light has made all the difference. Through tears, fears, music, and hope, BTS reminded us that we’re not alone, and that no matter what, life goes on.
But with those feelings they still sought to bring comfort to a world that was feeling like nothing makes sense. Thank goodness for technology because BTS were still able to be with ARMY throughout the whole ordeal that it felt like they were holding their hands through it all. Even if things have not turned to normal, at least we have BTS. BTS had a great last year and here are their live stage performances. Which one was your favorite?
