BTS took time off their busy start of the year to celebrate an annual holiday together as Suga was also present during the celebration. BTS celebrated the Lunar Year in 2021 by creating a colorful card and wishing fans a Happy New Year. In South Korea, they celebrate the New Year Twice, at the beginning of the year in January and in February. Korean New Year generally occurs in January or February on the second new moon after the winter solstice. This 2021 is represented by the Ox, an animal considered to work, synonymous with wealth, diligence and honesty.
During this time, many Koreans visit family, perform ancestral rites, wear hanbok (Hanbok is usually worn for special occasions such as weddings, Korean New Year, child’s first birthday, etc), eat traditional food, and play folk games. Additionally, children often receive money from their elders after performing a formal bow. Many preparations go into celebrating the Korean New Year.
During the first morning, Koreans pay their respect towards their ancestors. Traditional foods are placed on a table as an offering to the ancestors, and a rite begins with deep bows from all family members. This is a sign of respect and a very important practice on the first day of the New Year in Korea. It is also where they pray for the well-being of all the family members. BTS wished ARMY lots of happiness, sending the new year’s card filled with fortune to ARMY.
Jungkook and Taehyung started the drawing. Each team was given 10 seconds to complete their task. The two maknae drew the bag with different seeds or objects that will help attract good luck, harvests and good omens, with the image of an Ox, the animal that represents 2021. Jin and J-Hope were in charge adding color to the drawing. Suga, Jimin and RM were to put the finishing touches to the drawing like a frame, sticker, meaningful phrases and hearts. At the end each member was tasked with adding a final detail as the rest of the members counted 10 seconds, Jin lost his chance as the seconds counted too fast so he was consoled with being given the chance to say the last speech.
In the end, everyone explained their part and the meaning behind their drawing, which gave ARMY more details about the boys’ traditions, as BTS wished them a good year filled with happiness and good fortune
