You know a song is a major hit when some of the biggest names in Hollywood do a rendition of that beautiful song. On Friday, W Magazine shared a video of Hollywood celebrities including Tom Holland, George Clooney, Jared Leto, Steven Yeun, Jacob Elordi, Tessa Thompson, James Corden and more singing and reciting the lyrics to the “Dynamite”
The clip was a 3-minute black-and-white video part of W Magazine’s “Lyrical Improv” series directed by journalist Lynn Hirschberg.
“In 2020, the superstar K-pop band BTS broke seven Guinness World Records with their song ‘Dynamite’: it became the most viewed YouTube video in 24 hours, got 7,778,950 streams within a day (and subsequently nabbed the title for the biggest Spotify release of 2020), and spent the most weeks at no. 1 for Billboard’s Social 50 chart,” W Magazine description
BTS’s “Dynamite” marked a historic moment not just for the group, but for the global music industry. Released on August 21, 2020, it became BTS’s first full English single and was crafted as a bright, uplifting anthem during the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic. The disco-pop track was designed to bring joy, and its catchy melody, retro vibes, and feel-good energy resonated worldwide. BTS aimed to bring a bit of light and positivity, and they succeeded—“Dynamite” quickly became a global sensation.
The song shattered records upon release. It debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, making BTS the first all-Korean act to top the chart. Its music video also broke YouTube records, gaining the most views in 24 hours for a music video at the time, and millions of fans tuned in for its premiere. “Dynamite” was a cultural reset, marking a major step in the group’s crossover into Western markets, further proving their worldwide appeal and influence.
Beyond commercial success, “Dynamite” earned BTS their first-ever Grammy nomination for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance, solidifying its significance in their discography. Their 2021 Grammy performance of the track, filmed in Seoul and ending on a stunning rooftop, captivated viewers and was widely praised for its creativity and style. The performance symbolized BTS’s growing presence in American award shows and their ability to shine on any global stage, even during a pandemic.
What made “Dynamite” even more special was the way it connected BTS and ARMY during a time of isolation. With concerts and tours on hold, the song became a shared joy between the group and their fans, offering hope, fun, and celebration. It wasn’t just a song, it was a message of resilience and positivity. “Dynamite” proved that music transcends language, borders, and even crisis, reinforcing BTS’s status as global icons.
